Student Athletic Trainer Program

Student Athletic Trainer Program

The Student Athletic Trainer Program at SHS has been in existence for 28 years.  The program offers a student the opportunity to work hands on in the Allied Health Field of Athletic Training under the supervision of Licensed Certified Athletic Trainers.  Students are educated and exposed to subjects relating to athletic training such as:  first aid, CPR/AED training, on field management of injuries, prevention of injuries, stages of rehabilitation and healing, rehabilitation modality usage, exercise uses in the rehabilitation process, exercise physiology theories, psychology of the injured athlete, administration of a athletic training facility, record keeping and documentation, competency skills of athletic training, sports nutrition, proper hydration practices, and taping and bracing of athletic injuries.

Students report to the athletic training clinic on a daily basis for the clinical experience.  During lunch blocks our injured athletes report for evaluations and/or treatment on their injuries.  This is where the Student Athletic Trainer is exposed to clinical skill sets.  After school hours the scheduled student athletic trainers report to the clinic as a home base to assist in the coverage of the sport assigned to them and take care of any athlete that needs preparation prior to practice and set up of medical and hydration stations.

On field experiences includes covering practices and contests.  Student Athletic Trainers are known for their organization and time budgeting skills.  The commitment is time consuming and they need to have a high level of responsibility and time budgeting management skills to juggle all of a teenagers adversities.

For each year a student is in our program they are responsible to perform up to 22 competency skills.  These skills include but not limited to:  taping, bracing, wound care, rehabilitation exercise, cleaning of facility, mentoring underclass students, modality usage etc.

Our program is quite comprehensive and we feel that if any of our students pursue a career in Athletic Training they report to the college ranks with a high level of knowledge and skill sets.  The program can offer the mentioned experiences to students wishing to pursue a career in any medical field.
