On the 5th of October 12 of our harpists in grades 6 - 11 attended the annual Harp Day at Michigan State University. This is a day in which the harpists meet other harpists from around the state and attend presentations, recitals and master classes. During the day the students also have the opportunity to have a free private lesson with Chen Yu Huang, the MSU professor of harp. The day culminates in an event called "Harp Jam" in which a harp ensemble made up of all interested in playing, performs a new composition. This year it was directed by the composer, Molly O'Roark.

On Thursday, October 10th, members of the High School Orchestra, along with members of the band and choir attended a performance of "The Barber of Seville" at the Chicago Lyric Opera. It was an all day trip, but a great opportunity for these students to see professional musicians performing in such a great setting and endeavor.

On Saturday, October 12th, selected 7th and 8th grade members of the Middle School Orchestra attended a day long event at Portage Central Middle School called The Mid-Level String Clinic. This event is sponsored by the Michigan Band and Orchestra Association and is offered in Portage as well as South Haven and Chelsea. On this day the students were members of one of two orchestras made up of Middle School Students from Sturgis, Portage, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek Lakeview. The students rehearsed throughout the day and performed in a concert in the afternoon. It was a great opportunity to meet students from other areas who also play string instruments.

Lastly, on Sunday, October 13th, the High School Orchestra presented their annual Fall Concert in the cafeteria annex of the High School. The event was very well attended and the students performed beautifully.

Now, after a brief rest the groups begin preparing for concerts in Nottawa and at the Auditorium for winter and Christmas time. Great things happening at Sturgis!! #TrojanPride
