Sturgis High School Annual Education Report

 August 10, 2012

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2011-2012 educational progress for the Sturgis High School.  The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws.  The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality.  If you have any questions about the AER, please contact the high school office for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site http://www.sturgisps.org/cms/lib01/MI01000489/Centricity/Domain/1/2012 SHS AER.pdf or you may review a copy from the Sturgis High School office.

For 2011-2012, Sturgis High School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing; as appropriate for the school grade levels tested).  While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve.  We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL

Sturgis High School is the only high school in the Sturgis Public School District(SPS) that services students in grades 9-12.  Any parent/guardian new to the district wishing to enroll their child in the school must complete the registration process in person during our regular office hours.  Ninth grade students are automatically enrolled at Sturgis High School if they were current SPS students at the conclusion of eighth grade.

THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Sturgis High School maintains a 3-5 year school improvement plan with goals in each of the content areas including Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Student achievement data was used to determine strategies in curriculum alignment, instruction, and student assessment. A primary focus of the plan includes the delivery of support programs in a co-teaching environment for Special Education, English Language (ESL), and other at-risk students, maximizing student access to the Core Curriculum.  Best practice instructional strategies in each area continue to be an emphasis during staff professional development activities.

Access to the Core Curriculum

The state of Michigan has identified High School Content Expectations (HSCE) for Michigan schools.  They can be accessed at:

       http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-38924---,00.html

The state of Michigan, along with a majority of states, recently adopted the Common Core standards, which establishes clear and consistent goals for learning that will prepare our students for success in college and career.  They are closely aligned to the HSCEs.  The new Common Core standards and the alignment documents can be accessed at:

      http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-6530_30334_51042-232021--,00.html

In addition to the direction the standards provide, each content area has developed curriculum maps to ensure consistency across the district.  They are available from your building principal.

RESULTS FOR LOCAL COMPETENCIES AND NATIONALLY NORMED STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT TESTS

High School students are assessed one time annually in the areas of Reading and Mathematics using the Plan assessment, a nationally normed standardized achievement test    A comparison of 2011 to 2012 PLAN test scores for each grade is illustrated below.

Percent of students represented by parents at parent/teacher conferences

Sturgis High School met the goal of 100% parent/guardian participation at Parent Teacher Conferences in November 2011.  While we invite all parents to attend our conferences face to face, some parents choose not to participate.  For those parents, a follow-up email, letter, or telephone call is utilized.
