Hello!!  My name is Mrs. Debby Balk.  I am the computer, career, and health teacher at Eastwood School in Room #307, aka "Computer Island."  The Sturgis community has been home to me throughout my entire lifetime, so I consider it a privilege to be teaching the children in this community.

While growing up in a large family of four brothers and six sisters, I had lots of opportunities for growing, learning, and teaching which led to my interest in becoming a teacher.  After graduating from Western Michigan University, I began my teaching career in the Sturgis Public Schools.  Soon after, I went on to receive a master’s degree in school counseling and attained a "limited" license in professional counseling.  Just recently, I completed enough hours to receive a "full" license in professional counseling from the State of Michigan.   In my everyday interactions with students, I use my counseling skills to support students with their overall academic success.

My husband's name is Tim Balk.  We live on a small lake just north of Sturgis with our seven cats and dog Chonny.  We also have some farm land where we enjoy being outdoors and hanging out with our horse, Lizzy. In addition to my life with Tim and my teaching career, I treasure spending time with family and friends, reading the bible and attending church, and getting to know my students.  In my spare time, I enjoy walking, reading and participating in community service.
